 So here’s what happens

1. A load of people share a series of common interests, depending on the current social state of the world and what seems fashionable at the time- e.g. “hey guys I’m emotional, and I like black stuff”, “I like improving my academic ability”, “I like music that other people don’t listen to.”

2. After a bit, a few people notice these social changes, seeing the idiosyncracies, and decide to name this new cultural group a derogatory name- e.g. “emos”, “nerds”, “hipsters”.

3. The name catches on, and all of a sudden everyone hates the group with murderous passion. Anyone owning any of the characteristics of the social groups are religiously abused, this can be justifiable, as often some parts of the groups are often absurd or frustrating to see- e.g. feigned depression, social awkwardness, and pretentiousness about music taste.

4. Eventually the social group dies down, at least in its conventional form. The original participators have realized what’s wrong with belonging to the group (or in the case of “nerds” the group becomes gradually more acceptable) and have moved on to new things. The prejudice remains though, and spreads far further than necessitated by the original group. Now everyone despises anyone who shares characteristics with the social group. E.g. “Hey you’re wearing all black, why don’t you  go slit your wrists you emo!”, “You passed every exam? Man you’re a nerd.”, “Yeah, you think that nebula looks cool, you hipster.”

Many believe that the way these groups reject mainstream conformity is hypocritical, as the group itself looks for conformity for it to exist. By criticizing those who have typical characteristics of the group, you are causing the conformity though, as these are alternative youth cultures. You are participating in the popular hatred of extremely random things (sush as black clothing, glasses or triangles), because of the fact you have been told they are bad. The reason for the hatred of these groups is caused by their idiosyncrasies, but long after these have disappeared, the social groups serve as a warning to any who dare defy the social norm, that you will be treated negatively.
